Fashion Fair Planned to Help Speed Up Sales

The Thailand Fashion Expo in October is expected to help further improve business in the Ratchaprasong area of central Bangkok as it recovers from the political unrest of April and May.

The Commerce Ministry will join with CentralWorld, Siam Paragon and leading local brand owners to stage the event from Oct 20-26.

With 50 million baht in government funding, it will include business matchmaking between domestic brands and foreign buyers, and exhibitions of leading local products.

Commerce Minister Porntiva Nakasai said the fair would also include seminars, with two world-renowned designers already booked as guest speakers.

They are Vivienne Westwood, one of the most influential British fashion designers, and Nunthirat "Koi" Suwannagate, a leading designer born in Bangkok and living in Los Angeles.

Koi made her New York Fashion Week debut in 2007 to high acclaim from the fashion press and retailers.

The same year, Vogue and the Council of Fashion Designers of America recognised her talent with a nomination for the Fashion Fund Award. Most recently, Women's Wear Daily named Koi's S/S 09 collection one of the top 10 of the season.

The two designers will also showcase their work at the event. Ms Westwood will launch her Vivienne Westwood Gold Label London-Bangkok collection, featuring handmade Thai silk from a project supported by Her Majesty the Queen.

In parallel with the expo, a designer competition reality show will be broadcast on Channel 9.

Mrs Porntiva said Thailand's fashion industry enjoyed great growth potential, given the fact that the country is well equipped with supporting industries such as textiles, jewellery and ornaments.
